There’s nothing more nerve-racking than feeling like you cannot put into words, what you think. So many thoughts and yet a blockage to connect them. If you find yourself in this situation, then my friend you are experiencing a “writer’s block.”
A writer’s block can be very stressful and discouraging, because It makes you feel stuck. However, there are 2 sides of this “coin”, the bad news and the good news.
The bad news is that you can stay in this state even for a long period of time. The good news is that there are different ways to immediately put yourself back on track.
Therefore, I wanted to share with you some strategies to put you back on track.
1. Write
The most triggering way to overcome the disability to write is :”writing.” It looks paradoxical but there’s more to it.
The blockage here is not only with writing but also with the discomfort of just starting to write. I would suggest to start writing whatever comes to your mind. No matter how messy and disconnected it may seem.
Keep writing drafts and remind yourself that no one is reading them except you. This way you will avoid perfectionism crises and impulsive thoughts.
After one or two hours you won’t have a final draft but you will have a base on what to fill in later. This will create a structure for your draft and will keep you moving. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed! 🙂
2. Put yourself in the reader’s position.
Change roles, and become the reader for a while. What is the name of the topic? For example, the topic is: “How to be more disciplined?”
Okay, you see this topic; you feel intrigued to read it because you want to be more disclipined. Think in this prism. This is the auidence’s prism.
Can you put the solution you offer for this problem into practice or are you just mumbling bullshit ? Are the steps clear enough ? What may be an interesting aspect in relation to the article?
And last but not least would you read your own article? My advice would be to read it and draft it until you are sure that even you will enjoy reading it. PS (Just don’t be too harsh on yourself)
Additionally, every question that you may want answers to as a reader is a great way to bring you closer to the desired result. Your ideas may be great but if they lack structure, what would be left would be just a deposit of “unlocked potential.” Do not be a gem hidden under the ground!
3. Take enough time
Take your time, and focus on the quality of the article, not on the speed of writing it. If your goal is to transmit your ideas in the best way possible, then you should “keep the clock on your side.”
Writing and re-reading the material for a couple of days is excellent too. However, this depends on the length and the intensity of the writing piece.
Therefore, taking too long for a short or medium length article isn’t the best approach to keep you moving. This can make you feel stuck even more. On the other side, not spending enough time for writing a book can produce a disaster.
Furthermore, if heavy or sensitive topics are your thing, I would suggest applying this method frequently. You will never know how words can impact your audience. That’s why you should leave yourself time to revise your work.
4. Read
Reading is an excellent way to get yourself back on track but not only.
I would suggest reading something that inspires you, something that gives you a fresh perspective, a refreshing feeling. I would suggest reading something that renews your mind. Something to bring that “spark” back.
Reading any kind of book can have a negative effect on triggering your authentic self. Therefore, don’t just find a good book but a mind-blowing book that energizes you. Find an amazing book to entertain your mind and your soul with vibrant ideas and perspectives. Ignite the passion to write again, even manually.
5. Find your muse
The Muse should be a trusted destination for answers. A hand when you need one. Someone to talk you through tough decisions or situations. A starting point.
–Kathryn Minshew
Your room isn’t always your muse. Sometimes your muse is outside your walls, far away from noises, somewhere where you have authority over your thoughts.
Furthermore, your muse can be found even in a random meeting with your friends. I can proudly say that most of my ideas have been triggered by different discussions, with my friends or family.
Your muse can be found on a random morning, at your local coffee shop. What’s so interesting about the “muse” is that it can be found in unexpected places and situations.
The muse can be found everywhere, if you possess the ability to think.
These were some of the tips I had for you. I wish you a lot of success in your writing! Also, let me know, what do you do to “destroy” the writers’ block.(Comment below, I’m curious😁)
